Application

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to determine client requirements, research possible solutions and communicate advice on principles and practices for a permaculture system to the client.

This unit applies to individuals who take responsibility for their own work and for the quality of the work of others. They use discretion and judgement in the selection, allocation and use of available resources.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Identify client requirements for advice

1.1 Initiate contact with client and record personal details according to workplace procedures

1.2 Determine scope and type of permaculture advice required

1.3 Identify financial and time constraints available to client for advice

1.4 Prepare a brief for requested advice and confirm with client

1.5 Secure approval to progress with brief from client according to workplace procedures

2. Provide client with general information on permaculture

2.1 Source general information on permaculture design principles and practices

2.2 Provide client with general information on permaculture design principles and practices

2.3 Clarify general information on request from client

2.4 Provide client with supplementary resources and references according to client needs

Performance Evidence

An individual demonstrating competency must satisfy all of the elements and performance criteria in this unit.

There must be evidence that the individual has, on at least one occasion, engaged with a client to provide advice on permaculture principles and practices and has:

  • identified requirements for advice and prepared a client brief
  • provided general information to support client understanding of permaculture principles and practices
  • investigated current principles and practices of permaculture
  • investigated permaculture applications for client brief
  • documented and provided specific advice on permaculture practices and strategies according to client brief.

Knowledge Evidence

An individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge required to perform the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • twelve principles of permaculture
  • ethics of permaculture, including:
  • care for the earth
  • care for all people
  • fair share of surpluses
  • setting limits to biophysical growth, including population, resource use and waste
  • permaculture practices and strategies, including:
  • personal, household, community and bioregional strategies
  • sustainable agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture and organic gardening
  • economic alternatives that support sustainable living
  • low energy and low embodied energy building and manufacturing
  • appropriate technology
  • restoration ecology and maintenance of biodiversity
  • sustainable community development, bioregional development and relocalisation
  • reuse and return of products in manufacturing cycle and waste utilisation
  • waste water, grey water, sewage and resource treatment for reuse and recycling
  • sustainability education
  • elements of permaculture systems
  • functions of permaculture systems
  • permaculture design techniques
  • innovation in plant, animal and technology selection, use and performance
  • recent practice in bioregional community development and local energy descent planning
  • client communication techniques, record-keeping and listening techniques
  • preparation of reports and presentations for clients, including:
  • types of presentation of advice, including visual, oral, formal or informal

Assessment Conditions

Assessment of the skills in this unit of competency must take place under the following conditions:

  • physical conditions:
  • skills must be demonstrated in a permaculture environment or an environment that accurately represents workplace conditions
  • resources, equipment and materials:
  • research tools and equipment
  • analogue and digital reference resources
  • specifications:
  • workplace policies, procedures, processes
  • client brief
  • permaculture and organic principles and practices
  • relationships:
  • client.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
