Release 1 . This is the first release of this unit of competency in the UEP Electricity Supply Industry - Generation Sector Training Package Release 2.0.

Application

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to undertake scheduled routine work activities in the electricity supply industry (ESI) - large scale wind generation environment.

Routine work activities include undertaking tasks such as the operation of non-critical plant systems, lubricating plant, performing minor maintenance on electrical and mechanical equipment, cleaning plant, performing warehousing stock duties and operating mobile load shifting equipment.

Competency in this unit requires the ability to carry out routine work activities in an electrical supply generation environment - wind. Individuals will work, under supervision, as a maintenance operative in a power generation facility.

The application of the skills and knowledge described in this unit may require a licence/registration to practice in the workplace.

Other conditions may apply under state and territory legislative and regulatory licensing requirements which must be confirmed prior to commencing this unit.

Prepare to undertake routine work activities 

1.1 

Instructions for work activities are identified and confirmed in accordance with workplace procedures

1.2 

Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) policies and procedures are identified and confirmed for use in accordance with workplace procedures

1.3 

Tools, equipment and personnel protective equipment (PPE) are identified and checked to ensure they are safe to use in accordance with workplace procedures

1.4 

Resources and materials are identified and obtained in accordance with workplace procedures

1.5 

Schedule of work, including practices for working safely such as use of safety data sheets (SDS) and manual handling techniques, are confirmed in accordance with workplace procedures

2 

Carry out work activities 

2.1 

Hazards are identified and risk controls are implemented in accordance with workplace procedures

2.2 

Schedule of work is followed in accordance with workplace procedures to ensure work activities are completed to an agreed timeframe, quality standard and with a minimum of waste

2.3 

Workplace procedures and practices applicable to electricity supply by wind generation are applied

Instructions are sought, if required, from appropriate personnel in accordance with workplace procedures in the event of unplanned events

Regular checks of work quality are undertaken in accordance with workplace procedures

Check completed work activities

Appropriate personnel are notified of task completion in accordance with workplace procedures

3.2 

Tools, equipment, surplus resources and materials are cleaned, checked and returned to storage in accordance with workplace procedures

3.3 

Work area is cleaned up and made safe in accordance with workplace procedures using sustainable energy practices

3.4 

Records are updated in accordance with workplace procedures

Assessment requirements

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two separate occasions and include:

  • applying work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements, including:
  • emergency procedures
  • identifying hazards
  • risk control measures
  • safe working practices
  • carrying out routine work activities, including servicing and maintenance tasks
  • checking results
  • communicating with personnel
  • completing work
  • complying with regulations, industry standards, legislative requirements, codes of practice, manufacturers’ recommendations and specifications, and environmental requirements
  • performing routine activities using safety data sheets (SDS)
  • preparing to undertake routine work activities
  • using tools, resources, materials and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • working with maintenance schedules.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • maintenance schedules
  • regulations, industry standards, legislative requirements, codes of practice, manufacturers’ recommendations and specifications, and environmental requirements
  • routine work activities, including servicing and maintenance tasks
  • SDS
  • tools, resources, materials and PPE
  • WHS/OHS legislated requirements, including:
  • emergency procedures
  • identifying hazards
  • risk control measures
  • safe working practices
  • wind generation, types and characteristics
  • workplace documentation, policies and procedures.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must hold credentials specified within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must satisfy the Principles of Assessment and Rules of Evidence and all regulatory requirements included within the Standards for Registered Training Organisations current at the time of assessment.

Assessment must occur in workplace operational situations where it is appropriate to do so; where this is not appropriate, assessment must occur in simulated workplace operational situations that replicate workplace conditions.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Resources for assessment must include access to:

  • a range of relevant exercises, case studies and/or other simulations
  • relevant and appropriate materials, tools, equipment and PPE currently used in industry
  • applicable documentation, including workplace procedures, equipment specifications, regulations, codes of practice and operation manuals.
