Unit of competency

Modification History

Release 1. Supersedes and is equivalent to MEM07031C Perform metal spinning lathe operations (complex)

Application

This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to perform complex metal spinning operations (excluding computer numerically controlled [CNC]) operations, using advanced processes, spinning tools and accessories.

Where there is a requirement to join spun materials or products in addition to, or instead of, (the spinning operation of) swaging, the following units should also be selected as appropriate:

  • MEM05003 Perform soft soldering
  • MEM05006 Perform brazing and/or silver soldering; or
  • MEM05004 Perform routine oxy fuel gas welding; or
  • MEM05012 Perform routine manual metal arc welding

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Assessment requirements

Modification History

Release 1. Supersedes and is equivalent to MEM07031C Perform metal spinning lathe operations (complex)

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria on at least two (2) occasions and include:

  • following work instructions, standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safe work practices
  • identifying and interpreting specifications, drawings and other applicable reference documents for performing complex spinning lathe operations
  • calculating disc size and lathe speed including angles and radius
  • selecting chucks and mounting disc for forming
  • coordinating the use of multi-slides and tools, feeds and speeds
  • performing complex spinning operation using a range of accessories to produce finished work that meets specifications
  • removing finished work and storing to minimise damage
  • performing operational maintenance on the lathe and related equipment and making any required adjustments to lubrication levels.

Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

  • safe work practices and procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • complex spinning operations, processes and techniques
  • requirements for maintaining lathe spinning tools and manufacturing form chucks
  • types of damage and defects including tool marks, cracking, stress marks, thinning and incorrect finish
  • function and operation of lathe accessories

Assessment Conditions

  • Assessors must:
  • have vocational competency in performing complex metal spinning lathe operations at least to the level being assessed with relevant industry knowledge and experience
  • satisfy the assessor requirements in the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 or its replacement and comply with the National Vocational Education and Training Regulator Act 2011, its replacementor equivalent legislation covering VET regulation in a non-referring state/territory as the case requires
  • Where possible assessment must occur in operational workplace situations. Where this is not possible or where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic operational workplace conditions. This must cover all aspects of workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills
  • Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant workplace procedures, product and manufacturing specifications
  • Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.
