Application

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist people with disability and chronic illness who require rehabilitation to attain and maintain optimum function and lifestyle.

Enrolled nurses working in rehabilitation environments hold and apply specialised in-depth knowledge, integrate theory and practice and make reliable clinical assessments and judgements.

This unit applies to enrolled nurses, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), seeking specialisation in enrolled nurse work that is carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under direct or indirect supervisory arrangements aligned to the NMBA regulatory authority legislative requirements.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.

No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Work in rehabilitation nursing environment.

1.1. Provide nursing care for the person with physical disability and chronic illness.

1.2. Provide nursing care that supports a multidisciplinary health care team to achieve cost effective health care outcomes.

1.3. Work in the rehabilitation care team to foster positive group dynamics with other health care professionals.

1.4. Contribute to long-term management and planning requiring rehabilitative care to maintain optimum function and lifestyle.

1.5. Identify opportunities for person to self-manage rehabilitative care needs.

2. Contribute to rehabilitation process.

2.1. Contribute to a safe and therapeutic environment and support activities that promote return of optimal function and minimise functional decline.

2.2. Apply requirements of manifestations of areas of dysfunction and associated pathophysiology of clinical manifestation.

2.3. Analyse and problem solve to propose actions and implement nursing interventions in line with changes to level of dysfunction.

2.4. Undertake physical assessment to develop and implement rehabilitation nursing plan of care.

2.5. Clarify psychosocial impact of dysfunction on daily living activities.

2.6. Communicate to reach agreement on multidisciplinary health care team goal setting for optimal rehabilitation and minimal functional decline.

2.7. Identify and apply strategies to prevent complications and chronic illness.

3. Promote improvement of nursing care and advancement of rehabilitation nursing.

3.1. Review and evaluate plan of care and modify according to progress toward planned outcomes.

3.2. Evaluate and document nursing care provided.

3.3. Evaluate nursing interventions and outcomes against evidence-based best practice in rehabilitation nursing care.

3.4. Seek opportunities and participate in professional development to guide own practice and act as a resource for colleagues.

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit in the context of the job role, and:

  • work as a member of the multidisciplinary health care team in the workplace, providing nursing interventions for three patients with different conditions requiring rehabilitation
  • conduct two activities to support quality and promote safe innovations in rehabilitation nursing applicable to a multidisciplinary health care team-based setting based on knowledge acquired through own professional development and learning

The tasks must be undertaken in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) professional practice standards, codes and guidelines.

Knowledge Evidence

Demonstrate knowledge required to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit:

  • community and in-hospital services available for people requiring rehabilitation
  • analytical thinking and problem-solving strategies related to nursing care of a person undergoing rehabilitation
  • diagnostic tests used to determine rehabilitative therapy
  • phases of care for people requiring rehabilitation
  • philosophy underpinning rehabilitative management
  • principles of health assessment
  • anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology of conditions requiring rehabilitation sufficiently in-depth and specialised to make judgements and to make a professional contribution in the rehabilitation care setting
  • factors included in the assessment of the impact of dysfunction:
  • performance of daily living activities
  • loss and limitations to physical function
  • accompanying trauma and injuries
  • impact on sexuality, relationships, self-image and body image
  • grief and loss
  • loss of vocation
  • coping mechanisms
  • personal and community support mechanisms
  • level of communication
  • maintenance and improvement of quality of life
  • maintenance and improvement of lifestyle
  • impact of secondary disease processes.

Assessment Conditions

To be eligible to apply for registration as an enrolled nurse and to practice in Australia, each applicant must complete a Diploma of Nursing program accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) and approved as ‘an approved program of study’ by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) in accordance with the Enrolled Nurse Accreditation Standards.

Skills must be demonstrated in the workplace or in a simulated environment as specified in the performance evidence that model industry operating conditions including access to real people for simulations and scenarios in enrolled nursing work.

Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations’ requirements for assessors.

Assessors must also hold current registration as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).
