Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform and deliver restoration work on recorded audio tracks using digital and manual processes.

The unit applies to those who restore fragile and archival audio tracks in film, television, radio, audio post-production and archival environments.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1. Clarify scope of restoration project

1.1 Confirm restoration requirements with required personnel

1.2 Obtain source material for restoration and confirm it is the most original and best quality recording with required personnel

1.3 Evaluate condition of source material and discuss its fitness for playback and restoration with required personnel

2. Prepare source material for digital transfer

2.1 Repair and clean source material in preparation for playback as required

2.2 Select audio playback and recording equipment to be used, accounting for fragility of source material

3. Make digital recording of source material

3.1 Set playback paths and recording settings to generate a flat, transparent and uncompressed file

3.2 Set audio levels for achieving maximum fidelity

3.3 Create digital recording of source material in line with restoration requirements

3.4 Monitor recording and mark sections that contain audio artefacts and damage

3.5 Record from other sources if sections of original version are missing or heavily damaged

4. Apply restoration techniques to audio tracks

4.1 Identify and select suitable restoration equipment and tools

4.2 Apply manual restoration techniques to audible artefacts and faults

4.3 Use automated restoration processes to de-noise audio tracks as required

4.4 Seek feedback on restoration work from required personnel and adjust as required

5. Make a copy of restored audio tracks

5.1 Apply post-production processes to restored audio track as required

5.2 Create master copy of restored audio track in agreed format according to restoration requirements, accounting for intended end use

5.3 Deliver master copy to required personnel in line with restoration requirements

5.4 Complete required documentation in line with restoration requirements and organisational procedures

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • restore at least two digital audio recordings according to different restoration requirements

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • confirm restoration documentation and requirements in consultation with others
  • create a digital recording of source material
  • identify and remove unwanted audio artefacts and repair damage
  • apply post-production processes, including signal and noise processes to restored audio tracks.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • methods used to evaluate condition of audio tracks
  • different types of playback and recording equipment and tools used in audio restoration work
  • manual restoration techniques used to remove audio artefacts
  • automated restoration processes used to de-noise audio tracks
  • organisational procedures for completing documentation required when undertaking audio restoration work
  • issues and challenges that typically arise when restoring fragile audio tracks and strategies to address issues and challenges.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • audio tracks requiring restoration work
  • audio playback and recording equipment required to demonstrate the performance evidence
  • audio restoration equipment and tools required to demonstrate the performance evidence
  • restoration documentation.
