Application

This unit describes skills and knowledge required to extend expertise across new art forms and media using exploration and integration. It involves exploring the potential of different new art forms and media, experimenting with new materials and techniques to extend skills and conceptualising new approaches to different creative works.

The unit applies to those who work as creative practitioners using experimentation and refinement to explore new ways of creating work.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

2.4 Apply developed technical expertise to chosen art form or media

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • produce at least two examples of creative work across different new art forms and media.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • assess the benefits of new art forms and media to current practice
  • develop and refine methods of working with new materials, processes and techniques using a practical process of experimentation
  • apply new expertise with techniques, materials and processes to selected art forms and media in creative work
  • apply critical and creative thinking ability to the development of new ideas
  • consider intellectual property requirements associated with new art forms and media when developing ideas for creative work
  • integrate new and existing skills and ideas into professional practice.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • relationship between materials, processes and techniques in the chosen art form
  • connections and associations between different art forms and media
  • works of prominent artists in the chosen art form
  • cultural, sociological, philosophical, aesthetic, political and commercial influences on the chosen art form, in historical and contemporary contexts
  • research and concept development processes used by the professional artist
  • intellectual property requirements and legislation associated with the chosen art form as a professional practice.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • sources of relevant information
  • equipment, materials and tools used to produce work in chosen art form.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
