Application
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to complete periodic and routine inspections of pool and other aquatic facility plant and equipment. It requires the ability to complete minor maintenance on equipment. Complex inspections, diagnoses and repairs are referred to specialist technicians.
This unit applies to public aquatic facilities including those operated by commercial, not-for-profit, community and government organisations.
It has particular application to aquatic technical operators, but can apply to other individuals working at different levels of responsibility. All would be guided by manufacturer instructions, and organisational inspection and maintenance schedules.
The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.
No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1. Complete periodic inspections of aquatic facility plant and equipment.

1.1. Interpret organisational schedules to determine inspection requirements for aquatic facility plant and other equipment.
1.2. Complete periodic routine inspections of pool plant, and other facility plant and equipment according to organisational schedules and manufacturer instructions.
1.3. Complete required organisational reports to confirm safety and operational effectiveness of plant and other equipment.
1.4. Identify and promptly report plant and equipment irregularities to appropriate personnel for further action.

2. Complete minor maintenance.

2.1. Interpret organisational schedules to determine periodic and routine maintenance requirements for plant and equipment.
2.2. Erect signs and barriers to isolate work area and maintain staff and patron safety.
2.3. Maintain cleanliness of equipment to avoid corrosion and deterioration.
2.4. Replace consumable items according to maintenance schedules and manufacturer instructions.
2.5. Complete minor non-specialist equipment repairs according to manufacturer instructions and organisational work health and safety (WHS) practices.
2.6. Report other required repairs outside scope of skills and responsibility according to organisational procedures.
2.7. Complete repair and maintenance records according to organisational procedures.

Evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit in the context of the job role, and:
- correctly interpret plant inspection schedules, and follow manufacturer instructions to complete the following:
- two periodic routine inspections of each of the following types of pool plant:
- water circulation system
- filtration system
- disinfection dosing system
- pH control system
- one periodic routine inspection of another type of aquatic facility plant
- correctly interpret maintenance schedules, and follow manufacturer instructions to complete the following activities:
- two routine maintenance tasks for aquatic facility equipment
- two minor non-specialist repairs on aquatic facility equipment
- for each above inspection, maintenance and repair task, complete accurate records.

- work health and safety (WHS) practices for inspecting and maintaining plant and equipment
- public health and safety implications of inadequately maintained equipment in aquatic facilities
- key functions and operational features of pool plant, and typical periodic inspection schedules:
- water circulation and distribution system
- filtration system, including backwash processes and indicators for remedial backwash
- disinfection system:
- automated dosing system
- continuous metered dosing system
- pH control system
- heating system
- key functions and operational features of other aquatic facility plant, and typical periodic inspection schedules:
- lighting system
- ventilation system
- inspection, cleaning and maintenance requirements for pool concourse and other wet floor areas:

- common types of consumables, and methods used to replace these
- common types of minor, non-specialist repairs
- tools and methods used to complete common repairs
- types of repairs referred to specialist technicians
- formats and inclusions of:
- organisational inspection and maintenance schedules for plant and equipment
- manufacturer instructions for inspection, repair and maintenance of plant and equipment
- records and reports for inspection, condition, repair, and maintenance, and how to complete these.
Assessment Conditions
Skills must be demonstrated in an aquatic facility with an operating indoor or outdoor pool used by members of the public. Facilities can include those operated by commercial, not-for-profit, community and government organisations.
Assessment must ensure use of:
- pool plant and other aquatic facility plant
- aquatic facility equipment
- repair and maintenance tools, equipment and consumable resources
- organisational inspection and maintenance schedules for plant and equipment
- manufacturer instructions for inspection, repair and maintenance of plant and equipment
- template records and reports for inspection, repair and maintenance
- organisational procedures for inspecting and maintaining plant and equipment, and for record keeping and reporting.
Assessors must satisfy the Standards for Registered Training Organisations requirements for assessors.
