Application

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to build on existing knowledge of the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts industry. It involves applying new knowledge of working with others to support cultural arts practice.

The unit applies to individuals who are working as part of a team in the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts industry. Individuals could be working in urban, regional, rural or remote settings. The work environment could involve interactions with artists and their communities in contexts such as cultural centres, arts centres, cooperatives, commercial galleries, public galleries, museums, retail outlets, community projects, exhibitions, events and festivals.

This unit reflects the diversity of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultures and their cultural arts practices. It emphasises the importance of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples controlling their own cultural heritage and identity.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • access information on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts practices, artists and their communities using required cultural protocols
  • record how knowledge of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts industry is applied in own work activities
  • document how own work activities support Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts practices
  • identify at least one or more areas for personal skill and knowledge development and plan for how this development will be achieved.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • roles of industry peak bodies that relate to work in one or more areas
  • impact of cultural arts practice and industry on environment
  • cultural, social and economic impacts on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts practices
  • copyright and intellectual property issues of cultural arts industry
  • legal and ethical considerations for own work
  • key principles and protocols for:
  • working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural material
  • interacting with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists, their families and/or communities
  • career development opportunities in cultural arts industry
  • different cultural arts practices used by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander artists with reference to region, medium, style and form
  • individuals, networks and organisations supporting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural arts practices.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to:

  • Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander cultural art, artists or their communities
  • cultural requirements, processes and techniques suited to language and literacy capacity of learners and work being performed.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational educational and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
