Description:

This course is intended to provide participants with a range of knowledge and skills to perform the following functions associated with health professionals providing lactation and or breastfeeding support such as Midwives, Maternal, Child and Family Health Nurses, Aboriginal Health Workers, Medical Practitioners, Allied Health Practitioners, Pharmacists, Lactation Consultants and Breastfeeding Counsellors and Educators:
• Maintain compliance with legal and ethical standards applying to the provision of lactation and breastfeeding support
• Communicate effectively with clients in a range of cultural contexts
• Take lactation histories and assess the mother-infant breastfeeding dyad
• Advise clients on breastfeeding, the appropriate use of breastmilk substitutes and the introduction of complementary feeding
• Counsel clients on the management of breastfeeding situations and problems
• Work collaboratively with colleagues to support breastfeeding clients with medical and pharmacological issues
• Critically evaluate breastfeeding research and apply outcomes to professional practice.
